SAS Adds Copenhagen – Atlanta in June 2024

On January 16, 2024, SAS announced it will expand its transatlantic network to include flights between Copenhagen and Atlanta. The route will launch on June 17, 2024, and operate daily for the rest of the summer schedule as follows:

  • SK929 / Copenhagen – Atlanta / 1:10PM – 7:00PM
  • SK930 Atlanta – Copenhagen / 5:10PM – 10:20AM+1

During the winter schedule, the frequency will be reduced to five weekly and the flights will operate with a slightly modified schedule:

  • SK929 / Copenhagen – Atlanta / 1:00PM – 7:10PM / Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat, Sun
  • SK930 Atlanta – Copenhagen / 5:00PM – 10:20AM+1/ Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat, Sun

SAS will deploy the A330-300 on the route during the summer and the newer and considerably larger A350-900 during the winter schedule.

The A330s are equipped with a total of 266 seats including 32 staggered business class seats in a 1-2-1 layout, 56 premium economy class seats in a 2-3-2 layout, and 178 economy class seats in a 2-4-2 layout. The A350s have 40 business class seats in a 1-2-1 layout, 32 premium economy class seats in a 2-4-2 layout, and 228 economy class seats in a 3-3-3 layout.

Atlanta will be – at the time it launches – the airline’s eighth destination in North America and seventh destination in the US, joining Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Newark, San Francisco, Washington D.C., and Toronto. Currently, SAS also operates flights to Miami but those will be discontinued in the first half of April 2024.

No other airline currently flies between Copenhagen and Atlanta.

SAS Connecting to Delta Air Lines’ Extensive Network

The reason why SAS chose Atlanta as its next long-haul destination is simple.

While SAS is a Star Alliance member for the time being, the airline is going through restructuring as part of which Air France-KLM will acquire just under a fifth of SAS. With that, in the coming months, SAS is expected to start transitioning to SkyTeam of which Air France is a founding member and KLM is a member too.

Atlanta Airport, being the home of Delta Air Lines, another SkyTeam member, is a major hub for SAS’ alliance-to-be.

As SAS President & CEO Anko van der Werff noted, “Through an agreement with Delta Air Lines, passengers can continue their journey on other Delta-served destinations out of Atlanta.”

“This development means an expanded offering for SAS passengers, who can look forward to reaching several new and exciting destinations across the Southern USA, Caribbean, and Latin America, all conveniently accessible from Atlanta,” he added.

Summary

In line with SAS’ planned switch from Star Alliance to SkyTeam, the airline announced it will be launching a new transatlantic route to Atlanta, a major SkyTeam hub where Delta Air Lines offers connections to other cities in the United States and the rest of the Americas.

The new route will operate daily in the summer using the A330-300 and five times a week in the winter using the A350-900.
