When Skymark announced that it was ordering Airbus A380s, there were many people predicting the delivery would never happen. And more or less, they were right. Skymark was unable to take delivery of the aircraft due to financial difficulties. However, in order to protect Skymark from one of its largest creditors – Airbus – ANA decided to order 3 of the super jumbos.
Thus, the presence of JA-registered A380s became a reality.
ANA plans to use these aircraft, which will start to get delivered in 2019, on the Tokyo to Honolulu route. As such, it had decided to make a contest where people could submit proposals for a special livery for the A380 to be painted in.
On March 6, 2017, ANA announced that it has picked the winner out of over 2,000 submissions. The special livery to be is titled “Flying Honu” and features a Hawaiian green sea turtle.
The airline also published four runner-ups of the contest.
While I am not a big fan of any of the runner-ups, I like the winning livery.
I hope I will be able to secure a seat on the first flight of the aircraft in spring 2019!
…and I can’t wait to see yet another great special livery in the Japanese skies.
Do you like the livery they selected or would you prefer one of the runner ups?
