Samsonite Winfield 2
A 100% polycarbonate hard-shell suitcase series. Available in three sizes and nine colors.
In a hurry? The Samsonite Winfield 2 series is well built, but fairly scratch-prone. The smallest and largest suitcases are slightly above most airlines’ luggage restrictions. That said, the medium-size (24-inch) spinner is a piece of luggage worth considering.
While Samsonite offers more than half a dozen different lines of luggage, the Winfield 2 series is by far one of the most popular ones. That’s despite the fact that a newer, slightly upgraded Winfield 3 DLX series is available as well.
In fact, because it is not the latest series anymore, it can often be bought at a very favorable price. In this review, I’ll take you through the product’s specs and user feedback to help you decide whether or not you should get it.
Samsonite Winfield 2: A Detailed Review
Before you make a decision about whether or not you should buy one of the Samsonite Winfield 2 suitcases, make sure to read the below. I’ll dive into some of the most important attributes of the product including the dimensions, material, quality, and so on.
Dimensions & Weight
Samsonite Winfield 2 suitcases come in the following three different sizes:
- 20” Carry-on Spinner: 23.0 x 14.5 x 9.5 inches (6.7 pounds)
- 24” Spinner: 27.0 x 17.5 x 11.75 inches (9.3 pounds)
- 28” Spinner: 31.0 X 20.0 X 12.75 inches (11.5 pounds)
If you are looking to replace both your carry-on and checked suitcases, you can also consider getting the complete Samsonite Winfield 2 luggage set.

There are two things worth noting regarding the suitcases’ dimensions and weight:
- They are light: All of the suitcases are slightly lighter than many similar ones. That can be especially useful in the case of the carry-on where the weight restrictions tend to be the strictest.
- They are expandable: You don’t have to worry about buying too many souvenirs at your destination since the 24″ and 28″ checked suitcases can expand their width by another inch or two. The carry on is not expandable, though.
On the other hand, the overall dimensions (including wheels) of the carry-on are slightly above the size limit of many airlines. The same applies to the 28″ spinner which, at 63.75 linear inches, is slightly larger than the typical 62-linear-inch limit on checked bags.
In most cases you should be able to get away with that. But some airlines are stricter than others, so it’s worth keeping in mind.
Material & Exterior
Winfield 2 are hard-shell suitcases made from 100% polycarbonate (PC) and lined with nylon fabric. They are spinners – i.e. they have four wheels and come with a telescopic handle.
They feature a stylish brushed design with rounded edges. And, they come in nine different colors: brushed anthracite, burgundy, charcoal, deep blue, navy, orange, purple, teal, and brushed black (carry-on only).
Unfortunately, quite a few users are of the opinion that the suitcases get scratched too easily. While it has no impact on their usability, this could be a dealbreaker if you like your things to look brand new as long as possible.

Storage & Features
The suitcases are “clamshells.” In other words, they split-open in half and consist of two main, similarly sized storage compartments.
One of those compartments is fully enclosed with a cover that includes two zippered pockets. You can use those to organize some of your smaller belongings. The other compartment features an X-strap.
Just like most hard-shell suitcases, the Winfield 2 suitcases are not equipped with any exterior pockets.
They also don’t come with any notable features other than a built-in TSA-approved lock. The lock uses standard keys rather than a numerical code.
Durability & Warranty
The suitcases are, overall, quite durable and well made. However, as mentioned earlier, the surface finish can come off fairly easily, and so, they can look fairly worn even after just a couple of uses.
Some users also reported having issues with their handles breaking. That, unlike the surface wear, should in most cases be covered by the product’s warranty.
The Winfield 2 suitcases come with a 10-year limited warranty which covers “defects in materials and workmanship.” In other words, it covers issues that Samsonite is responsible for, but doesn’t cover damaged caused by you or your airline.

Should You Get a Samsonite Winfield 2 Suitcase?
Now that you know what the Winfield 2 suitcases are like, it’s time to decide whether or not you should get any – or all – of them.
If you like to be 100% within the airline guidelines and not risk having to check your carry-on or having your checked luggage rejected because it’s an inch too large, then I don’t recommend getting the 20″ and 28″ models.
Similarly, if you like your luggage to look brand new as long as possible without much wear and tear, you might want to look for an alternative.
That said, if you are looking for a quality medium size checked-luggage, then you should by all means consider the Samsonite Winfield 2 24-inch spinner.
It will allow you to choose from multiple colors and enjoy the suitcase’s stylish brushed design. On top of that, you will be able to expand the suitcase if necessary – a feature that comes in handy when you buy one too many souvenirs or when you are going on an extended trip.
Finally, if you tend do a variety of different trips – short weekend ones all the way to long multi-week ones – you might consider getting the full set.
Just remember that – as mentioned a number of times – the carry-on and the 28″ checked suitcase are larger than most airlines’ luggage limits.

What Are the Alternatives?
Regardless of which size of the Winfield 2 you are considering, there are countless alternatives on the market – whether from Samsonite or from other brands.
One of the best non-Samsonite alternatives is the Delsey Helium Aero hard-shell suitcase. If you are looking for a more budget-friendly option, you should consider the Coolife expandable suitcases.
On the other hand, if you still want a Samsonite, but a different model, then make sure to check the Centric series and the Omni series.
Finally, before making a final decision, you can also look at my article about the best luggage sets and about the three most popular luggage brands (Samsonite, American Tourister, and Delsey) which should give you some more inspiration.
Summary
The Samsonite Winfield 2 series suitcases are of decent build quality – other than the fact that they are easily scratched. That said, both the carry-on and the 28″ pieces are a bit too large to fit within the regular luggage allowances.
While you should still be OK with the slightly oversized items most of the time, I can’t recommend them. However, I can recommend the 24-inch spinner if you are looking for a new piece of checked luggage for medium-length trips.
Especially so considering the fact that the newer but very similar Winfield 3 DLX series is out now – meaning the Winfield 2 series can often be had for a very good price.
