A couple of months ago, I wrote about JAL’s “Dokokani Mile” – a system where you can get an award ticket for a highly discounted rate you let JAL choose the destination. Today, I want to introduce something similar – although cash-based – offered by Lufthansa.
Let Lufthansa Surprise You
With Lufthansa Surprise, you can book roundtrip tickets from Frankfurt and Munich to a number of European destinations starting at 69 EUR. The fun part of it is – of course – that Lufthansa will choose the destination for you.
Well, sort of…
While you have no control over the exact destination, you can choose from nine different travel themes. Each of the themes features several cities, one of which you will end up traveling to.
The cheapest of those is “Go East” which will take you to one of selected Eastern European cities starting from 69 EUR roundtrip. The most expensive packages start at 99 EUR.
Here, I should not that Lufthansa Surprise books into Economy Light meaning no checked-in luggage is included in the price.
The More Flexible You Are, the Cheaper It Is
Once you select your preferred package, you will be able to specify the details of your trip.
Rather than choosing a departure and an arrival date, with Lufthansa Surprise, you specify the range in which you want to travel. And, then you specify minimum and maximum length you’re willing to stay at the destination.
At this stage, you can also uncheck cities that you do not want to visit to increase the chance of going to your preferred destination. The minimum number of cities you have to keep checked is three.
Of course, the more flexible you are, the more expensive the ticket gets. Even then, however, it can still be very attractively priced, though. In either case, your final price based on your parameters will be shown once you click “Request total price.”
When you are content with the possible destinations and travel dates, you can proceed to booking the ticket. You will know which destination you will go to right after finishing the booking.
Lufthansa Surprise Summary
Even though the departure cities from where Lufthansa Surprise is available is limited to Frankfurt and Munich, I still thought it was worth writing about it.
Even though I haven’t had a chance to try the system yet, I hope to do so sometimes in the near future when I go to Germany.
Whether you are based in Germany, or just visiting Germany and looking to do a side trip, I think Lufthansa Surprise is an interesting option to see some less visited European cities (or cities you otherwise wouldn’t visit).
