Earlier today, The Asahi Shimbun reported that a FedEx MD-11 making its way from Anchorage to Taipei as flight FX49 made an emergency landing at Tokyo Narita due to smoke in the flight deck.
FedEx Flight 49: Indianapolis to Bangkok
The flight that made the emergency landing was operated by an MD-11 registered N618FE, and was one segment of the multi-stop (and multi-aircraft) FedEx flight 49 which operates as once a week as follows:
- Indianapolis to Anchorage by a Boeing 777F (Friday)
- Anchorage to Taipei by a McDonnell Douglas MD-11F (Friday)
- Taipei to Singapore by a Boeing 767-300F (Saturday)
- Singapore to Bangkok by a Boeing 757-200F (Sunday)
Today’s FX49 took off from Anchorage shortly after 10:30AM local time and made its way across the Pacific Ocean. However, around noon Japan time, the flight declared emergency due to smoke in cockpit.Â
As such, it made a U-turn and made its way to Tokyo Narita airport where it landed on runway 34L at 12:32PM.
The flight departed Narita airport shortly after 3PM – after about two-and-a-half hours on the ground. And, it landed safely at its original destination, Taipei, around 6PM local time.
